Hey. Hope you had a great week! I’m Kathleen, and every week I dig through the noise to find the newest AI updates that are useful to your business.

Let’s jump in.

AI, Copyright & Human Consent Are Becoming a Bigger Deal

A new non-profit called RSL Media just launched with a focus on something many creatives and business owners have been worried about:

How AI systems use human-created work.

Co-founded by Cate Blanchett, the non-profit’s principle belief is “Every person should have the right to decide how their work, personal identity, characters and marks are used by artificial intelligence. “

Why this matters for small business owners

This issue goes way beyond artists and publishers. If you:

  • write blog posts

  • create graphics

  • record videos

  • build courses

  • publish photography

  • or create original business content

…this conversation affects you too.

Right now, AI tools are rapidly learning from online information, and there’s increasing pressure to create clearer rules around:

  • who owns what

  • how content can be used

  • and whether creators gave permission to use it in AI results

👉 For small business owners, this matters because your original content is part of your business value.

How it works (in plain English)

The idea behind RSL Media is to help AI systems better understand:

  • what content can be used

  • what requires permission

  • and what creators want protected

Think of it like adding “rules of the road” for AI systems interacting with human-created work.

Next Steps

Starting today, anyone can go to rslmedia.org to:

  • Reserve a Consent ID: Be among the first to secure an RSL Media Consent ID and share support on social media.

  • Learn about the Standard: Access the open consent standard and understand how permissions can be declared in a way AI systems can read.

  • Become a Trusted Partner: Organizations across entertainment, media, technology, policy and rights management can request to partner with RSL Media to help shape the next phase of the standard.

In June, RSL Media will launch a free public registry, where you can register and verify your identity, declare the permissions for your work, and ai will be able to verify content on the registry before using it.

The Bigger Shift

For the last couple years, most AI conversations focused on speed and capability. Now the conversation is expanding into:

  • trust

  • ownership

  • transparency

  • and human consent

That’s a healthy shift.

Yours in success,
Kathleen

P.S. Forward this to one business-owner friend who’s still “figuring out AI.” You’ll look like the smart one. 😊
